Travel Insurance: Why It’s Important to Read the Small Print

Travel insurance is a must if you’re travelling outside of the UK. In some countries, such as the USA, they won’t let you in unless you have adequate insurance cover. However, simply buying a travel insurance policy isn’t the answer; you need to buy the correct cover and the only way to be sure of doing so is to read the small print. Here are the things that you should be reading for:

1.Is there a limit to the length of the insurance? You need to make sure that cover extends to the fill duration of the holiday. These travel insurance companies can be quite tricky. You might think you’re buying a cheap policy, but what you're really buying is a short policy.

2.Do they exclude any pre-existing medical condition? If you have a medical condition, you need to ensure that it is included in the policy. You will probably have to buy medical condition travel insurance. This means talking to the insurer, rather than using a comparison website. The policies that you find on the comparison websites often exclude the medical condition. They allow you to have the insurance, but in the small print is a clause that says they won’t cover you for anything related to that condition. Make sure you buy medical condition travel insurance if you have a medical condition.

3.Are you insured for the country of travel? Some insurers won’t provide insurance for travel to certain destinations. This is usually to places where there is civil unrest, or where they threaten westerners. Make sure that you are covered for the destination to which you’re travelling.

4.Exclusion of certain activities. Some insurers won’t cover you for certain activities. For example, most will have exclusions concerning sky diving, some may exclude scuba diving accidents. Make sure that you are covered for the activities that you know you’re going to be doing.
